Wooden houses and a maritime atmosphere characterise the spa town of Naantali

RAUMA

Road Atlas [124 A1]

Plan some time for a walk. The historical ensemble of this town (pop. 40,000), some 90 km (56 mi) away, is an artwork to be marvelled at. Rauma’s narrow alleyways and 200 little shops invite you to browse. The 600 wooden houses in the Old Town, which are still lived in today, are a World Heritage Site (www.oldrauma.fi).

In addition to its beautiful buildings, Rauma is widely known for lacemaking. At the end of July, the lacemakers – masters of their craft – exhibit their handmade products at the traditional Lace Week. The highlight of this festival is the Black Lace Night on Friday. If you want to stay a bit longer, how about combining the charm of the town with the flair of the coast – and choose somewhere to sleep a little out of town? The island Kylmäpihlaja can be reached from Rauma every day in summer (June–Aug). The lighthouse is now a hotel and restaurant with expansive views over the open sea (11 rooms | tel. 044 0 82 29 64 | www.kylmapihlaja.com| Moderate). Tourist information office: changing locations | tel. 02 8 34 35 12 | www.visitrauma.fi

The Åland ferries offer cheaper fares to those who spend a night on their way to and from the harbour at the end of the archipelago. Yellow ferries are generally free. Information: www.alandstrafiken.ax

Free admission is also given to the beautifully located Jan Karlsgården Open-Air Museum. The pretty museum includes demonstrations of traditional crafts. May–Sept daily 10am–5pm | Kastelholm, Mariehamn
